President Bush's insistence on approving this nightmarish immigration bill has shown his willingness to abandon the conservative base. Not long ago a pundit speculated that Bush is becoming the GOP's Jimmy Carter. I'm not sure if that's accurate, because Bush really has had two presidencies, and it appears perhaps his second term is the "Carter" term. I'm not sure that's too far from the mark.
