So, the government is bailing out giant mortgage houses Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Let's put it another way. American taxpayers are bailing out the two FMs. You and me, and all our neighbors get to shoulder the burden of others' mis-steps and poor judgement. Why does this smack of socialism? Let me think.... give me a minute... oh, perhaps because it IS socialism!
It would hurt to have them fail. Yes. But it needs to fail and let the market correct itself back to a responsible level of free market capitalism. This solution is, at best, a temporary band-aid, only to postpone an inevitable collapse. Government's role was never to protect people from their own financial mis-steps. The market alone does it just fine, if we let it.
