LDS, non LDS discussion feedback

I've had some different feedback on today's topic about how the LDS and non LDS people associate in east Idaho. One particular listener, cjpolatis@onewest.net, clearly a loving Christian, wrote:

"OK OK get on with it. shup-up and take calls. we get where your coming from"

Sorry to have disappointed you, cjpolatis, perhaps this show's not for you.

Another commenter on the blog writes:

"When I was a child, I was at summer school at BYU. There was a playmate who was a southern baptist boy who one day fell down a flight of stairs and was banged up pretty bad. Through his tears he blurted out the the S*** word. Instead of me and my LDS friends comforting him, we turned our backs on him in self righteous indignity. That poor boy was alone for the rest of the summer as we all discriminated against him for what he said. Now, 40 years later I am so ashamed of what we did. If I knew where to find him I would beg his forgiveness. We were wrong. I pray that he has forgiven us for our insensitive cruelty."

I think we all have done things we'd like to undo. I know I have.

Neal, I recently moved back to SE Idaho, from Missouri, and my biggest fear about moving here was being surrounded by so many LDS members. And I'm LDS! In Missouri, very few of my friends were LDS and it was so nice to not have this Us vs. Them mentality that so many people here have. They were just my friends. I didn't care what religion they were and they didn't care what religion I was. They respected that I don't drink alcohol, and I respected their desire to have a beer or glass of wine with dinner.

And I wasn't their friend so I could have them meet the missionaries. We just all tried to be good Christians and genuinely cared about each other.

One more thing... having lived in Jackson County, Missouri for the past 16 years, if I were to tell someone that I am a "Mormon", people either wouldn't know what I was talking about, or they would have a negative reaction to that term. I can't stand how so many members of this church refer to themselves FIRST as "Mormons", and then are offended when others don't think we are Christians. Its our fault for being to lazy to say we are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Yes, its faster to say Mormon, but that is really such a poor descriptor of what our religious beliefs are.

So, just remember that to someone who isn't of our faith, the term Mormon really has more negative connotation than positive, and is confusing at best. Until the 1980's it was still legal to kill a "Mormon" in Missouri!

Thanks for letting me rant!!
Mark
